An alaysis with the exports of fruits and vegetables from BiH to the European Union was presented yesterday in Banja Luka. This is a joint project of the Ministry of Agriculture of Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, assisted by consultative councils within the Business Climate Enhancement and Market Access Project, and conducted by the World Bank Group (IFC) in partnership with the British Embassy in BiH.
"This publication is, above all, aimed at potential exporters, and is especially important after the signing of the stabilization agreement to join the EU market, which will benefit local producers," said Zoran Malešić, Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the RS.
The Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the FBiH, Nijaz Brković, pointed out that the analysis contains detailed procedures for the export of fruit and vegetables to the EU, the necessary documentation (trade, transport, and customs), analysis of laboratory work in BiH, standards and other information.
The Deputy estimated that this publication would be of great importance to farmers, whose production is expected to grow and exports to increase. BiH reported an annual increase in exports of fruit and vegetables, while the average annual growth rate in the last eight years reaching 24 percent. Maletić said that the biggest fruit exports are: raspberries, strawberries and plums; and the largest vegetable exports are: cucumbers, peppers, and cabbage.
At the press conference, special attention was paid to the current weather situation, which with extremely low temperatures for this time of year and snow, with frost expected throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, is likely to affect fruit and vegetable production.
Ministry representatives have pointed out that it is still too early to estimate the damages to crops and orchards, but that procedures have started. They pointed out that frost would have a worse effect than snow.
